Signs of Overwhelm: How to Know You’re About to Spiral

Most of us don’t recognize the signs of overwhelm until we’re already deep in it.
We’re snapping at people we love. Lying awake at 2 AM running worst-case scenarios. Eating the entire bag of whatever’s in the cabinet. Refreshing our inbox like it owes us something. And then wondering: how did I get here?
Well, the spiral doesn’t come out of nowhere. There are signs. Little signals your mind and body send before the overwhelm takes over, if you know what to look for.
The problem is we’ve been conditioned to push through and treat rest like a reward we haven’t earned yet. So we miss the signals. Or we see them and tell ourselves we’ll deal with it later.
Catching the signs early? That’s where everything changes.
The Most Common Signs of Overwhelm (That People Miss)
Take notice if you find:
You’re catastrophizing the small stuff.
When the Wi-Fi goes out and it feels like evidence that your whole life is falling apart, that’s not about the Wi-Fi. When a mildly critical email from a coworker has you questioning your entire career, that’s not about the email either. That’s a sign your nervous system is already maxed out and there’s no buffer left.
You’ve stopped doing the things that fill you up.
The walk you usually take. The call with your friend. The 10 minutes of quiet in the morning before everyone else wakes up.
When we start dropping the things that calm us, it’s a red flag. It’s almost counterintuitive: the more overwhelmed we feel, the more we abandon the practices that help. We tell ourselves we don’t have time. But what we’re really doing is removing the last bit of scaffolding holding us up.
Everything feels urgent.
Your to-do list has stopped being a list and started being a threat. Everything needs to happen now, everything is equally important, and the idea of pausing feels impossible. You’re in constant motion but somehow getting less done. That frantic, scattered energy? It’s a sign you’re headed somewhere you don’t want to go.
You’re irritable in a way that doesn’t quite fit the situation.
Short fuse. Low patience. That simmering feeling like everyone around you is doing everything wrong. Sometimes it shows up as snapping. Sometimes it’s quieter. Just a general feeling of being rubbed the wrong way by life.
This is one of the earliest signs and one of the easiest to dismiss as just being in a bad mood.
You play the “Once” game – you’ll feel better “once”
Once this project is done. Once the kids are back in school. Once things calm down a little. Once you get through this week.
If your peace is permanently parked in the future, the spiral is probably already underway. “Once” is one of the sneakiest signs because it sounds reasonable. It sounds like a plan. But it’s actually a way of putting off the support you need right now.
Your body is talking and you’re not listening.
Tight shoulders. Jaw clenching. Shallow breathing. Fatigue that sleep doesn’t touch.
Your body knows before your brain does. It’s been trying to get your attention. These physical signals aren’t random, they’re information. And they get louder the longer they’re ignored.
You know what’s great? You don’t have to wait until you’re flat on the floor to do something about it. The earlier you catch it, the easier it is to come back to yourself and the less ground you have to make up.
You deserve support before the crash. Not just after.
I wish you space and clarity,
