Mindful Intentions: Beyond New Year’s Resolutions

Happy New Year! I hope your holidays were peaceful and kind. I, for one, am glad to have them behind me, though 2024 decided to give me one final kick in the ass with a nasty head cold on New Year’s Eve. Fun! 🤧
But… that was then, and this is now. Peace can always be found in the present moment.
And that is my “resolution” for the New Year if you want to call it that. I’m not a resolution girlie, but I am setting the intention of bringing myself back to the present moment as often as possible. That, I believe, is the key to fulfilling any and all of my dreams.
For this week’s post, I’m sharing a piece written by a friend of mine, with her permission. I love the message in it and thought you might, too.

That old acquaintance we should have forgot has returned. The clock strikes twelve, and for a brief moment, everything pauses. There’s this energy, this weight in the air—like the world is holding its breath.
It’s funny, isn’t it? How we treat this one night as if our entire future hinges on it. We’re all ready to reset, to reinvent. New year, new me, right? But why do we think just because the calendar flips, we suddenly become something we weren’t before?
I mean, sure, we can make resolutions. We can promise ourselves we’ll eat better, exercise more, maybe learn a new skill or finally tackle that to-do list that’s been mocking us for months. But the reality is—life doesn’t wait for us to be “perfect” before it happens. And yet, there’s something almost magical about that fresh start. It’s like the universe is giving us a little nudge, a reminder that it’s never too late to try again. To grow. To change.
But let’s be real. We’ve all been there, haven’t we? We make these grand declarations: “This year will be different. This year, I’m going to crush it!” And by February, we’ve already forgotten what we promised ourselves. But maybe, just maybe, it’s okay to not have it all figured out. Maybe the real gift of the New Year isn’t about becoming a new version of ourselves, but about embracing who we are right now—flaws, failures, and all.
So, as the fireworks light up the sky and the champagne flows, let’s celebrate what we’ve learned. Let’s toast to the mistakes, to the lessons, and to the moments we’ve survived. Here’s to the messiness of life and the beauty that comes from it. Let’s step into this new year with open hearts, knowing that it’s not about perfection. It’s about showing up, day after day, and being proud of how far we’ve come.
The world doesn’t need another version of someone else. It needs me. The real me. I will learn to be okay with that. To embrace all the flaws, the mistakes, the things I used to hide away. They make me who I am, and that’s worth celebrating.
Let’s embrace the challenge. Let’s embrace the chaos. Let’s be unapologetically ourselves, and let the New Year unfold however it’s meant to.
Here’s to the journey ahead, to all the laughs, the lessons, and the moments that remind us we’re exactly where we need to be.
Happy New Year. Not to the new you—but to the real, wonderful, and wonderfully imperfect you, for the sake of Auld Lang Syne.
Wasn’t that beautiful? It gives me chills every time I read it. I hope you can resonate with it as much as I did, and know that it is okay to be perfectly imperfect.
I wish you space and clarity,

Thank you for this message, Kerri, and the letter from your friend, Clare. I appreciated that she read it as well!
I started out with a cold and cough on New Years Eve as well. Yippee, she says sarcastically.
I’m not a resolution girlie either and, I like the idea of intention setting.
I wanted to just ‘be’ more for this year and your reminder to just simply come back to the present moment is very helpful.
I am doing A Course In Miracles (with Marianne Williamson), for the first time. So far, I have done it every day! Yay, me!
Happy New Year.
I wish you much love, joy and peace in 2025!
Debbie
You’re welcome! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Yes, I’ve come to realize that any resolution I would make would be easier attained by getting better about being present. That way, you live in joy much more often which makes you a magnet for that dream life!
Well done on your consistency with A Course in Miracles!
I hope you have a fantastic 2025!
