Finding Calm in the Chaos: How to Be Present When Life Gets Loud

Click below to listen to this post.
You ever notice how your mind loves to time travel? One minute you’re replaying yesterday’s awkward moment in high definition. The next, you’re catastrophizing about next week’s flight, project, or conversation.
Meanwhile, the moment you’re actually living in is waving its hands like, “Hey! Over here!”
I’ve spent a long time practicing what it means to stay present – to actually be where I am instead of everywhere else in my head.
Some days I nail it.
Other days… not so much.
And nothing tests that practice for me quite like travel.
✈️ A Lesson at 37,000 Feet
If you’ve been in my world for a while, you know I’m an anxious flyer. In the weeks leading up to this trip to Spain, I was practicing presence like my boarding pass depended on it.
As departure day crept closer, my mind turned into a full-blown debate club:
“Wow, I’m actually excited to get to Spain.”
“Excuse me? You can’t be excited. You should be nervous about the flight. And if you’re not nervous, you should definitely be nervous that you’re not nervous.”
That voice? That’s my Protector part. (If you’re familiar with Internal Family Systems, you know the type.) She’s the part of me that’s always on duty – ready to prevent disaster, even when disaster’s not on the schedule.
Because in her world, if you’re not on alert, life will absolutely sucker-punch you.
🌬 What Presence Really Means
What I’m learning is that presence doesn’t mean calm skies. It means remembering that I’m still okay when turbulence hits – literal or otherwise.
It’s catching myself mid-spiral and choosing to land in now instead of crash-landing into what if.
Presence doesn’t cancel fear or irritation; it just changes your relationship with them.
It turns “Oh no!” into “Oh, this.”
That tiny pause between stimulus and reaction? That’s where all your power hides.
☀️ Landing in the Now
The more I practice, the faster I find that space. Sometimes I even get to hang out there for a bit before my mind bolts off chasing the next imagined emergency.
But every time I notice, breathe, and return – it’s a win.
Because the truth is, life’s always going to be a mix of beauty and turbulence. The goal isn’t to avoid it. It’s to trust that you can ride it out.
Right now, I’m writing this from my hotel room in Barcelona, doing my best to stay focused while a fire alarm test randomly blares down the hall.
Even amongst this noise, peace finds a way in – not because the world gets quiet, but because I do.
I wish you space and clarity,

P.S. If you could use some help quieting the noise in your own life – mental, emotional, or otherwise, I invite you to sign up for one of my Intuitive Coaching Sessions. Together, we’ll tune in to what truly matters, clear the static, and help you refocus on what’s most important right now.
