Fanning the Flames of Your BHAG
Melissa and I recently took a drive to Maine to look at properties for sale. One of the BHAGs (big, hairy, audacious goals) we’re considering is buying a piece of land, moving our tiny house to it, and either building a small (but not tiny) sticks-and-bricks home or adding a “she shed” type studio in which I can work. While we’re not ready to make an offer on anything, it felt important to take some action on our vision.
That’s the thing with big goals — ya gotta show the universe that you mean business otherwise it comes off as lip service and Uni ain’t havin’ any of that. It’s one thing to come up with a BHAG or two, but it’s another thing to fan the flames.
Doing so also allows you to see if your vision is what you hoped. You can daydream all you want but it’s not until the rubber meets the road that you’ll get a sense of what it’s like to be on the trail you’re thinking of blazing.
As you do this, a few things can happen:
- You may find out your BHAG is not anything you imagined it would be and you head back to the drawing board,
- It’s WAY more than you could have ever dreamed and you become even more committed to blazing that trail, or
- You’re not quite sure which way it’s going to go so you focus on the next few steps to gain some more clarity.
Any of the above is a success and none of it can be determined until you make some moves to take your BHAG for a test drive. So this week, pull out a pen and paper, write your big, hairy, audacious goal at the top, and then identify at least one step you can take within the next seven days to slide into the driver’s seat.
