Behind on Your Goals This Year? Here’s How to Reframe It

I don’t know about you but September always does something to me. Not quite January-fresh-start energy. More like a quieter, more honest version of it.
We’re closing in on the final quarter of the year, and there’s something about that turn that makes it worth asking: how has this year actually gone so far?
Not the highlight-reel version. The real one.
Give this a go:
Go back to January. What did you intend for this year? Not the vague stuff like “be more productive,” or “get healthier.” The specific stuff. The project. The goal. The thing you pictured yourself having done by now, or at least well on its way.
Now look at where you spent your time and attention these past eight months. Be honest. Not judgmental. Just honest. Where did the hours go? What got the energy that project was supposed to get?
For a lot of people, there’s a gap there. Sometimes a small one. Sometimes a big one. And usually, right about now, there’s one specific thing sitting quietly in the back of your mind: the thing you thought would be done, or close to it, by September. And it’s not.
How do you talk to yourself about that gap?
If you’re like most people, the internal voice goes somewhere unkind pretty fast. I should have done more. I’m behind. I always do this. Why can’t I just follow through on things.
I want to offer you a different read.
A gap between intention and reality isn’t evidence that something’s wrong with you. It’s evidence that the plan you made in January didn’t account for something, and that something is almost always the same thing: you tried to do it alone.
Not because you’re bad at follow-through. Because nobody’s particularly good at follow-through in a vacuum. Willpower is a finite, moody resource. It shows up strong in January and quietly checks out by March, and that’s not a personal failing. That’s just what willpower does when it’s the only thing holding a plan together.
Instead of a shame spiral, consider this:
The year isn’t over. You’re about to walk into the last quarter of it. Not enough time to do everything you meant to do in January, but plenty of time to finish one thing. The one that’s been sitting there. Yup, that one.
And this time, maybe the plan doesn’t have to be “try harder, alone, again.” Maybe it’s a different kind of plan; one that has other people built into it, not as a nice-to-have, but as the actual structure holding the thing up.
That’s the shift worth making before the year runs out: not more self-discipline, but less isolation. Not a longer to-do list, but one clear thing and a real container to finish it in.
More on what that could look like soon. For now, just ask yourself the honest question: what’s the one thing you don’t want to carry into 2027?
I wish you space and clarity,
