A New Take on Spring Cleaning: Digital Detox

Melissa and I took our first beach walk of the season this past weekend and oh boy, was it a breath of fresh air. Haha literally! 🤣
Picture this: comfy sweatshirt weather, the sounds and smells of the ocean amplified in the best way, and everyone we passed seemed as elated to be there as we were.
Emerging from the long New England winters always feels like a rebirth. Seriously, by the time February and March roll around you begin to wonder if you’ll ever feel the warmth of the sun again. 🌞❄️
As we wandered along the shoreline, Melissa and I dove into some deep conversations. We swapped takeaways from our respective therapy appointments, brainstormed ways to mark our 20th wedding anniversary in September, and reveled in the joy of being away from our screens for a while.
They’re everywhere, aren’t they — those screens? Whether it’s my phone, computer, or the TV, it feels like my day dissolves into a blur of pixels.
That blissful beach walk got me thinking. With spring in full swing here in the northern hemisphere, I’ve decided to give my life a bit of a spring cleaning in the form of a digital detox. 🌼
I’ll admit it – I’m a tech addict. I spend way too much time scrolling on social media, binge-watching YouTube videos, and cracking up at TikTok fails (admit it, those slip-and-fall videos are hilarious 😂).
While I love the life hacks I learn and the new music I discover, it’s time to bring the amount of screen time way down.
Now, I’m not going to lie, the idea of cutting back is daunting, but here’s my game plan for a digital detox that I’m hoping to stick with:
- No more middle-of-the-night phone checks. 🌙🚫
- At least one screen-free evening per week to read an actual book, play a board game, or journal. 📚🎲📓
- Get rid of toxic Twitter (or “X” 🙄) once and for all.
- Turn off all those pesky push notifications. 🔕
Yup, I’m starting small-ish, but hey, small steps, right?
So how about you? What kind of creative spring cleaning could you try? Here are a few ideas to get your gears turning:
- Tidy up your email inbox 📧
- Refresh your resume 📄
- Clear out those half-done projects that feel like “shoulds” 🗑️
- Cut down on your plastic use, or 🛍️
- Reevaluate your financial goals 💰
Drop me a reply and share your plans!
In the meantime, wish me luck with my digital detox, and let’s all make this spring a time for renewal, both online and off. 🍀🔄
I wish you space and clarity,
